Neil Gaiman - Signal to Noise (1992)

Somewhere in London, a film director is dying of cancer. His life's crowning achievement, his greatest film, would have told the story of a European village as the last hour of 999 A.D. approached - the midnight that the villagers were convinced would bring with it Armageddon. Now that story will never be told. But he's still working it out in his head, making a film that no one will ever see. No one but us.

Jingle Belle (1999-2008)

Jingle Belle is the cute, bouncy, teenage daughter of Santa Claus. Unfortunately, when you're dealing with teenagers and their parents, along with the bouncy cuteness, there's bound to be a certain amount of teen angst.

Chronologically, at least, and by human standards, Jing isn't exactly a teenager. In fact, she's in her 220s (she attributes her prolonged adolescence to having immortal parents). But she occasionally "borrows" the sleigh for a joy-ride, enjoys a gabfest with gal-pals like Polly Green (rhymes with "Halloween"), and has spent more time on the Naughty List than all the bad little boys and girls put together. Jing could start a filthy, anti-ecological power plant with all the lumps of coal she's accumulated over the years. (She claims Dad, aka "His Lardship", judges her more harshly than the other kids, and anyway, he's a stinker.) Mom is an elf queen, and when anybody mentions her elf ancestry, she points out that she didn't get her ears at a Star Trek convention.

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop (2011)

After a much-publicized departure from hosting NBC's Tonight Show - and the severing of a 22-year relationship with the network - O'Brien hit the road with a 32-city music-and-comedy show to exercise his performing chops and exorcise a few demons. The "Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour" was O'Brien's answer to a contractual stipulation that banned his appearance on television, radio and the Internet for six months following his last show. Filmmaker Rodman Flender's resulting documentary, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, is an intimate portrait of an artist trained in improvisation, captured at the most improvisational time of his career. It offers a window into the private writers room and rehearsal halls as O'Brien's "half-assed show" (his words) is almost instantly assembled and mounted to an adoring fan base.

Philip K. Dick - A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Bob Arctor is a dealer of the lethally addictive drug Substance D. Fred is the police agent assigned to tail and eventually bust him. To do so, Fred takes on the identity of a drug dealer named Bob Arctor. And since Substance D--which Arctor takes in massive doses--gradually splits the user's brain into two distinct, combative entities, Fred doesn't realize he is narcing on himself.

Caustically funny, eerily accurate in its depiction of junkies, scam artists, and the walking brain-dead, Philip K. Dick's industrial-grade stress test of identity is as unnerving as it is enthralling.

Harper Lee - Mockingbird Duology (1960-2015)

To Kill a Mockingbird:
Set in the small Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird follows three years in the life of 8-year-old Scout Finch, her brother, Jem, and their father, Atticus--three years punctuated by the arrest and eventual trial of a young black man accused of raping a white woman. Though her story explores big themes, Harper Lee chooses to tell it through the eyes of a child. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of growing up.

Go Set a Watchman:
Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch—"Scout"—returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise's homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town, and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past—a journey that can only be guided by one's own conscience.

Fullmetal Alchemist (2001-2010)

Fullmetal Alchemist follows the story of the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, who live in a world where those who know how to do so can practice the art of alchemy (transmuting one material into another or reshaping it into new forms). The brothers' skill with alchemy at an early age lead them to believe they can bring their recently-deceased mother back to life using human transmutation — a forbidden, taboo practice of alchemy. Their hubris costs Ed his right arm and left leg (now replaced with artificial "automail" limbs) and leaves Al as a soul affixed to an empty suit of armor. Years later, the brothers set out to find the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary artifact said to allow any form of transmutation without the necessary Equivalent Exchange.

The government tightly controls knowledge about the Philosopher's Stone, however, so Edward takes — and passes — the State Alchemist Examination to become "a dog of the military" and gain access to the State's information. The brothers also do the government's work by traveling around the country and solving problems, though trouble often finds them first. As the Elrics dig deeper into the mystery of the Philosopher's Stone and search for a way to create one, they stumble onto truths about their family and friends, the military, the Stone, and even the very nature of alchemy itself — and they also discover a vast conspiracy led by dark forces who wish to use their search for their own reasons.

Acme Novelty Library (1993-2010)

What would happen if William Faulkner, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Eugene O'Neill drew masterful strips for their Sunday comics pages? Frankly, we'll never know. But in the meantime we'll have The Acme Novelty Library and its eye-tearingly beautiful depictions of longing, despair, melancholy, disappointment, bleakness, lethargy, abandonment, and relentless parental cruelty. Not since Tosca has such utter emotional collapse been so ravishingly depicted.

All of Ware's extraordinary cast of characters are here: Jimmy Corrigan, the put-upon sad sack of the space age in Tales of Tomorrow, Rocket Sam, Quimby the Mouse, the Super-man, Sparky the cat, Big Tex, and introducing . . . Rusty Brown - the world's most pathetic over-grown adolescent toy collector and the star of Ware's next magnum opus (which won't be finished for years). Also included are Ware's trademark ingenious make-it-yourself paper toys, including: Rocket Sam's rocket ship, a Victorian 'library' cabinet, and an actual, working stereopticon picture movie viewer!

Dave Attell - Road Work (2014) HDTV

Veteran New York City comic Dave Attell is back with his Comedy Central stand-up special "Road Work." This unique special cuts together multiple performances from Attell's past tour. From New Orleans to Philadelphia to Minneapolis and more, "Road Work" feels more like a concert film than a traditional stand-up special. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper Attell show without his expert crowd work and clever R-rated material in what he calls "a filthy, dirty mess of a show."

Lewis Grizzard - If I Ever Get Back to Georgia (1990)

The late Lewis Grizzard got his first newspaper job when he was 10 years old. Thirty-odd years later (30 very odd years), he was still in the newspaper business and still infuriated by it, still tickled by it, and still very much in love with it. If I Ever Get Back to Georgia, I'm Gonna Nail My Feet to the Ground is all about that anger, that great humor, and that even greater passion for something that affects every single one of us: the daily newspaper.
