Mary Shelley - Frankenstein (1994-1995)

In 1994, actor Robert Deniro starred in the first motion picture to faithfully follow Mary Shelley’s immortal novel, Frankenstein. Previous films had generally treated Frankenstein’s creation (the creature was actually named Adam-not Frankenstein) as yet another scary monster, a dumb brute bent on evil and destruction. In the original treatment seen here, the creature is a tragic figure brought to life, then abandoned by an uncaring master.

After being left for dead by Doctor Frankenstein, who is stricken with guilt over his unholy actions, the creature finds his maker by reading Frankenstein’s journal and forces him to create a monster bride so that he might not be lonely all his life. Frankenstein agrees for fear that the monster will kill his fiancée.

Comic book adaptation of the film.

R. Crumb - Hup (1987-1992)

Classic Crumb comics from one of the strongest phases of his career! Hup is filled to the brim with usual suspects engaging in typical Crumb hilarity.

Crumb took aim at many targets, among them real estate mogul Donald Trump, who, in issue 3, was confronted by a raging Crumb who called him "one of the most evil men alive" and a "slime-ball," before Trump smarmed his way to victory over Crumb, winning the affection of beautiful women and sending the police with guns drawn to confront Crumb for "wasting his time." Then, in a Crumbian reversal, he imagines a surprise ending where he is triumphant.

It's Crumb all over: weird, self-deprecating, sexist, and before its time. Long before "Make America Great Again," Crumb had Trump's number.

Ian Rankin - Resurrection Men (2002)

Inspector John Rebus has messed up badly this time, so badly that he's been sent to a kind of reform school for damaged cops. While there among the last-chancers known as "resurrection men," he joins a covert mission to gain evidence of a drug heist orchestrated by three of his classmates. But the group has been assigned an unsolved murder that may have resulted from Rebus's own mistake. Now Rebus can't determine if he's been set up for a fall or if his disgraced classmates are as ruthless as he suspects.

When Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke discovers that her investigation of an art dealer's murder is tied to Rebus's inquiry, the two-protege and mentor-join forces. Soon they find themselves in the midst of an even bigger scandal than they had imagined-a plot with conspirators in every corner of Scotland and deadly implications about their colleagues.
