Margaret Atwood - The Handmaid's Tale (1985)

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now...

Alice N' Chains - Demos (1987)

Alice N' Chains was an American glam metal band from Seattle, Washington formed in 1986 by former members of Sleze. Towards the end of their run as Sleze, discussions arose about changing their name to Alice in Chains. However, due to concerns over the reference to female bondage, the group ultimately chose to spell it as Alice N' Chains. They performed under this moniker over about a 12-month period and recorded two demos before breaking up on friendly terms in 1987. One of its members, Layne Staley, ultimately took the name that he and his former bandmates had initially flirted with when he joined a different group a few months later that ultimately became known as Alice in Chains. Alice N' Chains recorded two demos known primarily as "Demo No. 1" and "Demo No. 2"; both from 1987.

Oink - Blood & Circus (1998)

This apocalyptic neo-Western transpires in a future in which technology has been lost, and the human race has devolved to the cultural level of 1800s America. A man-pig hybrid known as Oink wanders the landscape, attempting to solve the riddle of his own terrible origins, and to find his own paradise, where he may live free and in peace.

Joining forces with embittered super-soldier Bone Machine, Oink strives to ensure that the nightmare world of human technology that birthed him will never again create monsters such as him.

Ultimately, Oink’s surreal journey allows the reader to view the inhuman aspects of being human, through the eyes of a being that remains external to humanity and its cruelty. Oink learns the hard way that each creature has the ability to make a heaven of its world…or a hell.

John Hodgman - The Areas of My Expertise (2006)

In the great tradition of the American almanac, The Areas of My Expertise is a brilliant and hilarious compendium of handy reference tables, fascinating trivia, and sage wisdom on all topics large and small. Although best sellers such as Poor Richard's Almanack and The Book of Lists were certainly valuable, they also were largely true. Here is a different kind of handy desk reference, one in which all of the historical oddities and amazing true facts are sifted through the singular, illuminating imagination of John Hodgman, which is the nice way of saying: He made it all up.

Sam Kinison - Breaking All The Rules

Between 1985 and 1987, an angry ex-preacher in Houston was the hottest comic on television, screaming his way through memorably ferocious sets on Letterman, SNL, and Rodney Dangerfield's Ninth Annual Young Comedians Special. Kinison's first solo HBO showcase was his victory lap, collecting the best of his early routines, from rants about his troubles with women to some boldly blasphemous thoughts about the grossness of Christ's crucifixion. ("I like being the only savior who can use his hand as a fucking whistle!") It was wildly inappropriate, shockingly hilarious material from a comedian who turned a banshee scream --"Oh oh OHHHHHH!" -- into both a post-punchline punctuation and a signature move.
