In this BBC dramatization of King's 1983 best seller, Dr. Louis Creed moves his ideal family from congested, urban Chicago to the rural simplicity of Ludlow, ME. His property sits near a long-established pet burial ground and a mysterious Indian burial ground from which the dead can be raised. The program effectively draws us into the characters' world: marriage and family, then shock, grief and madness as we explore the nature and mystery of death. Presenting a multivoiced dramatization rather than a reading of the novel, the actors work together, with added music and sound effects, to create King's macabre world.
The story of Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption begins in 1948 when Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank prison. In contrast to most other convicts, Dufresne is not a hardened criminal but a soft-spoken young banker, convicted of killing his wife and her lover. Like almost everyone else in Shawshank, Dufresne claims to be innocent. As we later learn throughout the novella, Andy, unlike almost everyone else in Shawshank, actually is innocent. Red, the narrator, has an ability to deliver contraband of almost any type (except, on his own principles, hard drugs and weapons) into Shawshank. This makes him an important man within the prison.
The Old Man and the Sea recounts an epic battle between an old, experienced fisherman and a giant marlin said to be the largest catch of his life. It opens by explaining that the fisherman, who is named Santiago, has gone 84 days without catching any fish at all. He is apparently so unlucky that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with the old man and been ordered to fish with more successful fishermen. Still dedicated to the old man, however, the boy visits Santiago's shack each night, hauling back his fishing gear, feeding him and discussing American baseball — most notably Santiago's idol, Joe DiMaggio. Santiago tells Manolin that on the next day, he will venture far out into the Gulf to fish, confident that his unlucky streak is near its end.
The main character in the story is a young man who discovers a series of notes left to him by his uncle, along with an "unnatural" sculpture. His investigation of these notes leads to the discovery of mysteriously similar cults that worship the same being as portrayed in the sculpture, who they call Cthulhu, said to be an ancient being from before the dawn of humanity that now sleeps in the sunken city of R'lyeh, waiting for the time to rise again, in both Alaska, and New Orleans. At the same time he discovered that artists all over the world, including the man who made this sculpture had been having dreams involving a "monstrous, cyclopean city" and the words Cthulhu and R'lyeh, which culminated on the night of the second of April.
