The Best of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in

YMbQ7[1]

Dan Rowan and Dick Martin produced an innovative strain of TV comedy in the late 1960s with their LAUGH-IN shows, encapsulated in BEST OF ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN. Spanning the years 1968-1970, which marked the era with a quirky brand of universal comedy and attracted an unshakeable audience. The laughs kept coming in a relentless fury, compliments of cast members Lily Tomlin, Goldie Hawn, Henry Gibson, Gary Owens, Alan Suhs, JoAnne Worley, Arte Johnson, and many more. In addition, hosts Rowan and Martin invited a wide variety of eclectic guests to appear, such as Cher, John Wayne, Joey Bishop, Jack Lemmon, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., and Richard Nixon, all of whose presence lends these shows a strong period flavor.

Harvey Pekar - American Splendor

rC0lZ[1]

American Splendor is a series of autobiographical comic books written by the late Harvey  Pekar and drawn by a variety of artists. The first issue was published in 1976 and the most  recent in September 2008, with publication occurring at irregular intervals. The stories in  American Splendor concern the everyday life of Pekar in Cleveland, Ohio. Situations covered  include Pekar's job as a file clerk at a Veteran's Administration hospital and his relations with  work colleagues and patients there. There are also stories about Pekar and his relations with  friends and family, including his third wife Joyce Brabner and their adopted daughter  Danielle. Other stories concern everyday situations such as Pekar's troubles with his car,  money, his health, and his concerns and anxieties in general. Several issues give accounts of  Pekar becoming a recurring guest on the NBC television show Late Night with David  Letterman, including a 1987 interview segment in which Pekar criticized Letterman for  ducking criticism of General Electric, the parent company of NBC. American Splendor  sometimes departs from Pekar's own life, with stories about jazz musicians, the artists for his  comics, and a three-issue miniseries American Splendor: Unsung Hero, which chronicles the  Vietnam experience of Pekar's African-American co-worker Robert McNeill.

Heavy Traffic

rFaID[1]

An animated feature which begins, ends and occasionally combines with, live-action filmed on location. A white dropout struggles to create comics and animated films, drawing inspiration from the harsh, gritty world around him. Still sharing his run-down apartment with his middle-aged parents, an oafish slob of an Italian father and a ditzy nut-case of a Jewish mother, he is ridiculed and looked down upon by his friends, hypocrites who run with violent gangs and the Italian Mafia, and a shallow Black girl who makes her living downtown with the pimps and pushers. This cartoonist gets a chance to pitch a film idea to a movie mogul, but the story proves too outrageous: a far-future Earth, destroyed by war and pollution, where a mutant antihero challenges and kills God. Complications ensue when the cartoonist's parents react in irrational ways to his various involvements.
