Spain Rodriguez's My True Story is--among other things--some of the best work that alternative comics can offer. Spain is one of comics' sharpest and most passionate observers, and, from his early years with the notorious Road Vultures Motorcycle Club, through his coverage of the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, to his acid commentary on the Iran-Contra scandal, he's always managed to be in the right place to see the yellowish underbelly of late 20th-century America. Both the autobiographical and the historical strips of My True Story are odes--usually tragic--to freedom created by one of comics' most original artists.
